CSTO Secretary General on Relations with Armenia

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) maintains working relations with Yerevan, and the obligations of the organization towards Armenia remain intact. This was stated by CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov in an exclusive interview with Izvestia.

“We are keeping our working relations with Yerevan. I would like to emphasize once again that the Republic of Armenia remains an ally, and the organization's obligations towards the country are being upheld. As for signals of readiness to resume cooperation with the CSTO, the format of relations has not changed and remains the same,” he said.

Armenia suspended its participation in the CSTO in February 2024, refusing to allocate funding to the organization, and is not participating in drills and meetings; however, it has not initiated the process of exiting the CSTO. Armenian authorities explain this position by pointing out that the CSTO did not respond appropriately to Azerbaijan's aggression following the incursion of Azerbaijani forces into Armenian sovereign territory in September 2022.
