The Biggest Online Heist of All Time Has Occurred
A cryptocurrency exchange has announced that it has fallen victim to a major hacking attack, with approximately $1.5 billion worth of digital currency stolen. This is considered one of the largest online thefts in history. Bloomberg reports that Bybit has declared that a routine transfer of Ethereum, one of the most popular cryptocurrencies, was turned into an attack through a 'deceptive' process between digital wallets. The cryptocurrency was transferred to an undisclosed address.
The company is attempting to reassure customers that their cryptocurrency holdings on the exchange are secure. Bybit has also added that the news related to the attack has led to an increase in withdrawal requests, which may experience delays in processing.
Bybit CEO Ben Zhou stated that the company will remain in business even if the stolen cryptocurrency is not returned.
