Negotiations on the Panama Canal Are Ongoing: Trump
Donald Trump, the newly elected President of the United States, announced that negotiations are already underway with the authorities of Panama regarding the Panama Canal. This was reported by РИА Новости.
Earlier, it was reported that protesters in Panama burned the American flag after Trump declared his intention to reclaim control of the canal. Trump stated that the U.S. would demand the return of control over the canal if Panama did not reduce the tariffs on ship traffic.
In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino said that the canal entirely belongs to his country.
The Panama Canal opened in June 1920 and connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The canal plays a key role in international trade, especially for Russia, which is under sanctions.
