Certain Lands in Syunik Recognized as Public Interest for Sisian-Kajaran Road Construction
The government, in its session today on December 27, recognized certain areas in the Syunik region as public interest within the framework of the North-South Road Corridor Investment Program - Program 4. The project aims to construct approximately 60 km of new road section from Sisian to Kajaran.
The justification states that the construction of the new road section is a priority for Armenia within the North-South Road Corridor Investment Program. The project plans to build a new asphalt-concrete road layer of 11.1m width, divided into 3 lanes (3.30 m), with a total length of about 60 km, including 27 bridges with a total length of 4.7 km and 9 tunnels with a total length of 12.5 km (the longest being the Bargushat tunnel, approximately 8.65 km long), as well as other works to ensure safe traffic.
As a result of the construction of the new Sisian-Kajaran asphalt-concrete road, the length of the Sisian-Kajaran road section will be reduced, which will decrease travel time, increase the average speed of vehicles from the existing 50 km/h to 100 km/h, and enhance the comfort and safety of traffic.
The expropriation zone of the new Sisian-Kajaran road includes several areas owned by other individuals that need to be expropriated. This pertains to affected segments of 570 land parcels located in the Syunik region.
The decision proposes to recognize the affected segments of a total of 205 land parcels (177 modified affected areas and 28 new areas) in the communities of Sisian, Aghitu, Darbas, Lor, Ishkhanasar, Noravan, Shenatagh, Vorotnavan, Sisian, Vagatn in the Sisian municipality and in the communities of Lernadzor and Geghi Nor Astghaberd in Kajaran municipality as public interest.
The owner of the expropriated property will be the Republic of Armenia, represented by the “Road Department” foundation. The deadline for initiating the expropriation process is set for December 1, 2025.
