Zurabishvili Will Be Forced to Resign, Says Georgian Prime Minister
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, will have to step down on December 29, following the inauguration of the new head of state, despite her desire to remain in office. This was stated by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in an interview with Azerbaijani Real TV, as reported by TASS.
“Salome Zurabishvili, unfortunately, tried to damage our country's national interests. This has been a sad phenomenon over the last three years, with the president directly opposing her own country's national interests. Thank God, Georgia has been and remains. Accordingly, the president has not been able to ruin much in our country. Her term will finally end on December 29, and she naturally must retire,” he said.
On December 14, presidential elections will take place in Georgia. For the first time, the new president will be elected by an electoral college, rather than by the citizens of the country. The only candidate is Mikheil Kavelashvili, a representative of the ruling “Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia” party, a former parliament member, and a former football player. The inauguration will occur on December 29.
Zurabishvili does not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections held on October 26, claiming that the presidential elections will also be illegitimate. She announced that she would remain in her presidential position, despite the election of a new head of state.
