Police Detain Butchers as Tensions Rise at Gumi Market
The situation near the Gumi market in Yerevan is currently very tense. Staff from the State Food Safety Inspectorate, along with special police units, are preventing butchers from opening their stalls and starting trade.
One of the butchers, describing the situation, said: “We don’t have an abattoir to slaughter animals. I brought the meat to Yerevan, and now they are confiscating it, saying I don’t have abattoir papers. I want a solution to this issue, otherwise, I have filled myself with gasoline; it’s better to set myself on fire than let them take this meat from me. This is the second time my meat has been confiscated. I have no other option; in the last 15 days, I have already lost 1.8 million drams. Who am I going to deceive, which farmer will I cheat out of money?”
The situation became so heated at one point that police began detaining butchers.
