Strengthened Control Measures at Lake Sevan Starting November 15

Due to the spawning period of the carp fish, strengthened control measures will be implemented at Lake Sevan and throughout Armenia starting from November 15. This was reported by the Ministry of Environment.

As part of the control measures, representatives of relevant government agencies will jointly hold meetings with the leaders of communities adjacent to Lake Sevan, fishermen, and citizens. “Awareness-raising activities will be conducted regarding the purpose of the measures and the actions to be taken, which are aimed at banning fishing for carp in Lake Sevan during the fish species’ spawning period.

In this context, swimming facilities, fishing gear, and temporary shelters for fishermen will be removed from the territory of the “Sevan” National Park. The entry of all types of fishing gear and swimming facilities into Lake Sevan will be prohibited. Strict control will be established on all forest roads leading to Lake Sevan, and checkpoints will be set up near the main exit roads from the region.

Around-the-clock duty will be established in the territory of the “Sevan” National Park. Inspections will be organized in markets in Yerevan and the regions of Armenia to exclude the sale of carp roe and fish. Citizens and our compatriots engaged in fishing should clearly understand that such measures have a single goal: to restore the ecosystem of Lake Sevan through the replenishment of fish stocks, which is in the interests of every citizen of the Republic of Armenia.

Dear citizens, we urge you to refrain from illegal fishing and selling of fish during the ban period. Carp fish is a crucial part of the food safety of the Republic of Armenia, and this issue should be approached with that awareness. We also call upon organizations actively engaged in environmental protection to diligently and compassionately approach this issue of national importance and support the implementation of the fishing ban measures,” the statement says.

Fishing for carp in Lake Sevan will only be permitted after the determination of the quotas for industrial fishing planned for 2025 and the signing of new contracts.
