Thousands of Swallows Fall in Austria Due to Rain

Thousands of swallows have fallen in Austria due to the rains that have plagued the birds during their migration flight to winter in Africa. This is reported by the Bild tabloid.

The publication noted that the humid weather has left no insects in the air for the birds to feed on during their journey. Consequently, the swallows have become exhausted, and the low temperatures have only worsened their condition.

Photos taken from Vienna, Lower Austria, and Styria show dozens of swallows huddled on windowsills, lying on sidewalks, or freezing in the snow.

The animal protection organization Tierschutz Austria has stated that the weakened flocks of swallows seen by Austrians are either already fallen or will not survive unless they receive help as soon as possible. Local residents are encouraged to collect the birds in boxes and bring them to rescue centers. Tierschutz Austria has specifically requested assistance from those with cars and driver’s licenses.

Bild notes that swallows should not be allowed to enter homes, as they panic and collide with furniture or window glass.
