Turkic Countries Adopt Unified Alphabet with 34 Letters
From September 9 to 11, the International Turkic Academy and the Turkish Linguistic Society held the third meeting of the commission on the unified Turkic alphabet in Baku, as reported by TRT.
During the meeting, a draft of the unified Turkic alphabet based on the Latin script was discussed, which was first proposed in 1991. The discussions resulted in unanimous agreement on an alphabet consisting of 34 letters.
The Turkish Academy highlighted the historical significance of this event. “The development of a unified Turkic alphabet facilitates understanding and cooperation among Turkic peoples while preserving their linguistic heritage,” the statement reads.
The organizers expressed gratitude to the governments of Turkic states and the members of the commission for their contributions to the development of the alphabet. All relevant organizations are now invited to actively support the implementation of the unified Turkic alphabet.
The headquarters of the Turkish Academy, which coordinated this project, is located in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
