Amirbekov: The Amendment of Armenia's Constitution is the Remaining Obstacle to the Peace Treaty
The drafting of a peace treaty with Armenia is nearing completion, but "we must be confident that it will be a lasting peace," stated Elchin Amirbekov, the Azerbaijani president's special representative, in an interview with the South Korean Korea Times newspaper. He reiterated Baku's precondition regarding the amendment of Armenia's Constitution.
"The remaining obstacle on the path to signing the peace treaty is Armenia's constitutional claim over Azerbaijani territory. Once this issue is resolved, we can move forward," he noted.
Amirbekov also ruled out the possibility of organizing negotiations with the participation of mediators between Yerevan and Baku. "We do not expect any international organization or third party to play a direct role, apart from supporting the two states on the path to peace," he emphasized.
