Upper Lars Fully Open, Including for Trucks
The checkpoint is now open for all types of vehicles.
The Upper Lars checkpoint has been opened for trucks as well. This information was provided to Sputnik Armenia by Vahan Hakobyan, the customs attaché at the Armenian Embassy in Russia. It should be noted that the Upper Lars crossing was not operational from 01:00 to 10:00 this morning due to technical upgrade works. Around 11:00 AM today, it was announced that operations for light passenger and freight vehicles were restored.
“A short while ago, service for heavy freight vehicles was also reinstated,” said Hakobyan.
It is worth reminding that Georgia is constructing a bypass road around the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars road (Gudauri-Kobi). This involves a nine-kilometer tunnel. The project plans to build a 23 km long two-layer concrete road, with 5 bridges and 5 tunnels. After the project's completion, vehicles will travel from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (at the Russian border) in 1 hour and 45 minutes (currently the trip takes 2 hours and 30 minutes). This will ensure uninterrupted traffic for vehicles throughout the year.
