Paris 2024: The Continuation of the Scandal. Iran Posts Billboards Supporting Christianity Across the Country
Iran has posted billboards featuring the Last Supper of Jesus Christ and images supporting Christianity across the country in response to the scandal that occurred at the Olympic Games. Iranian Telegram channels report this development.
It is worth noting that earlier, the Islamic Republic of Iran had summoned the French ambassador over an offensive image resembling Jesus Christ. The most significant criticism arose from a scene reminiscent of the biblical theme of the Last Supper, where instead of Jesus Christ, a woman with a crown sat prominently at the table, appearing inappropriately, surrounded by individuals of non-traditional orientations. A man lay on the table in a half-dressed state, mimicking the god Dionysus.
Additionally, Orthodox Ukrainian expert on antiquities, Sergey Shumilon, expressed his position on the actions taken at the Olympics. Shumilon stated that he was not offended, as firstly, it was a parody of another painting (Van Der Leyde’s ‘The Festival of the Gods’), and secondly, since the Olympics have pagan roots, one should not expect anything different.
A considerable number of people who identify as Orthodox Christians supported Shumilon’s opinion. This comes despite the scandal that erupted worldwide, leading to the removal of the Olympic opening video from both the website and YouTube. Furthermore, the organizers of this performance have already issued an apology.
