Critical Moment: All Parties Must Make the Right Choice in the Coming Hours and Days, Says Blinken on the Middle East

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, addressing the situation in the Middle East, stated that it is now a "critical moment." He urged the involved parties to work towards de-escalating tensions, as concerns about a larger regional war have grown following the assassination of a senior commander of Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

According to cbsnews.com, Blinken said, "We are engaged in intensive, almost around-the-clock diplomacy with a very simple message: all parties must refrain from escalation. Everyone must take steps to de-escalate tensions. Escalation serves no one’s interests; it will only lead to more conflict, more violence, and more insecurity."

He added, "It is also important to break this cycle by achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, which in turn will create better opportunities for more sustainable peace not only in Gaza itself but also in other areas where the conflict could spread." He called on all parties to find "pathways to agreement rather than looking for reasons to delay or say 'no.'"

"It is imperative that all parties make the right choice in the coming hours and days," he emphasized.
