Percentage of Poverty Level in Armenia for 2023 Published
According to 2023 data, 23.7% of Armenia's population is classified as poor. Of this, 1.1% is considered extremely poor. These figures have been released by the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia (RA SC), as reported by Hetq.
Compared to 2022, the poverty level has decreased by 1.1 percentage points, while extreme poverty has decreased by 0.1 percentage points. A citizen is considered poor if their monthly consumption does not exceed 53,590 AMD. This figure includes expenditures on food, household items, as well as utility payments, transport, medical expenses, and more. For those categorized as extremely poor, monthly consumption does not exceed 29,786 AMD.
Poverty is lower in urban areas than in rural areas. On average, 21.5% of the urban population is poor, compared to 27% in rural areas. The Statistical Committee has not released information on which region in Armenia is the poorest. A more detailed report on poverty will be presented in November of this year.
In addition, child poverty in Armenia for 2023 is reported to be at 31.7%. This means that among the children living in Armenia, this percentage belongs to families classified as poor. Among them, 1.8% are considered extremely poor. Officials from the Statistical Committee clarify that this statistic includes individuals up to the age of 18. Since 2019, the assessment of poverty has been conducted using a new methodology. Therefore, figures recorded prior to this period are not comparable to the new statistics.
The highest poverty level recorded in the last five years was in 2020, reaching 27%.
