Israel May Temporarily Withdraw Forces from Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces may temporarily withdraw troops from the Gaza Strip in order to facilitate the initial phase of a ceasefire and a hostage exchange deal with the Palestinian Hamas movement, reports RIA Novosti, citing The Jerusalem Post.

“The Israeli army may temporarily withdraw troops from Gaza to allow for progress on the hostage release deal’s first phase,” the publication quotes senior defense officials.

According to the site, Israel would not sustain significant security losses if it fully withdrew its forces from Gaza for 42 days; however, this concession would allow for the release of any surviving hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to discuss the terms of the agreement with senior officials in the United States during his three-day visit to Washington.
