Millions Left Without Electricity in Russia
Residents of southern Russia are complaining about massive power outages, leaving many without electricity. Affected cities include Novorossiysk, Armavir, Anapa, Gelendzhik, Taganrog, Bataisk, Rostov-on-Don, as well as some rural areas in Kuban and Krasnodar. Power has also been cut in Crimea and Sevastopol, where temporary electricity supply schedules have been implemented.
The cause of the outages is a malfunction in the generating equipment at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Energy. In connection with this, power consumption restrictions have been imposed in southern Russia, limiting it by 1.5 GW.
Rosatom has also commented on the situation, stating that one of the energy blocks at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant has been disconnected due to turbine generator malfunctions. It remains unclear how long the electricity consumption restrictions will last and when power will be restored. Recovery work is currently ongoing.
