Georgia's EU Membership Process Suspended, EU Ambassador Says

The process of Georgia's integration into the European Union has been suspended. This was announced by EU Ambassador Pavel Gerchik in a conversation with journalists.

“The intentions of Georgia's current government are clear to the leaders of the European Union. The law on the transparency of foreign influence is evidently a step back. The anti-Western, anti-European rhetoric is completely incompatible with the goal of joining the European Union. Unfortunately, at this moment, Georgia's membership in the European Union is suspended,” he said.

It was also reported that due to the foreign agents law, the European Union has frozen 30 million euros allocated for the Ministry of Defense of Georgia and intends to reduce direct assistance to the government while increasing support for media and civil society.

“I sincerely hope that after the elections in Georgia scheduled for October, whatever the newly formed government may be, it will again begin serious work towards integrating into the European Union,” Gerchik noted.
