Voting in Iran Extended for Another Two Hours
The election commission in Iran has announced that the polling stations for the presidential elections will be extended once again, now until 22:00 local time, as reported by the commission's spokesperson Mohsen Islamy to IRNA.
Initially, the polling stations were scheduled to close at 18:00 local time, but due to the influx of voters, the voting was extended by two hours. In the first round on June 28, polling stations remained open until midnight.
Former parliament member Masoud Pezeshkian, who received 42.45% of the votes, and Council of Experts member Said Jalili, with 38.61%, have advanced to the second round. The candidates represent the two main political movements in Iran. Jalili advocates for the interests of conservatives, while Pezeshkian is a representative of Iranian reformists.
The early elections are taking place on May 20 following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in an aviation accident.
