Turkey's Foreign Ministry Summons German Ambassador Over UEFA Inquiry into Turkish Footballer

Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the German Ambassador Jürgen Schulz to Ankara regarding the UEFA disciplinary investigation involving a Turkish footballer who displayed the gesture of the Turkish nationalist 'Grey Wolves' after the match. This information was reported by CNN Turk, citing diplomatic sources.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated the 'unacceptability of UEFA's investigation' and characterized the German authorities' stance as 'politically motivated and xenophobic.'

Earlier reports suggested that UEFA may disqualify the Turkish footballer for the extremist nationalist gesture. Merih Demiral celebrated scoring two goals during the Turkey-Austria match by showing the sign associated with the infamous 'Grey Wolves' group known for its anti-Armenian sentiment.

Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has called for the punishment of the Turkish athlete. It is noteworthy that the 'Grey Wolves' salute is officially banned in Austria.
