Iran Warns of Doctrine Change in Case of Existential Threat
Iran is not engaged in the development of nuclear weapons, but could alter its doctrine in the event of an existential threat to the country. This was stated by Kamal Kharrazi, advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader and head of the country's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations.
“If Iran faces an existential threat, the country will have no choice but to change its doctrine,” Kharrazi said in an interview with the Financial Times. He also emphasized that if the West reimposes sanctions that were lifted after Iran's accession to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the limitations placed on its nuclear program, there would be a serious response from Tehran regarding the change in its nuclear strategy.
Furthermore, the advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader noted that Tehran does not advocate for the creation of nuclear weapons.
