Airport Employees Accused of Working for Drug Cartels in Australia

Melbourne Airport employees in Australia have been accused of working for drug cartels that attempted to smuggle drugs into the country, reported the British newspaper Guardian, citing an investigation by border protection services.

The investigation revealed that 70 employees at Melbourne Airport had violated security checks over the last 12 months, with some suspected of being involved in organized crime activities.

According to the newspaper, it was also uncovered that international airline crew members had concealed illegal tobacco and tobacco products in double-bottom suitcases. This was allegedly done to avoid paying significant customs duties.

“It was discovered that two members of international crews performed their duties under the influence of prohibited substances, which resulted in at least one visa being revoked in Australia,” the publication noted.

Australian Border Force Superintendent Kelly-Anne Parrish stated that the investigation is ongoing and is focused on several individuals in aviation who are allegedly connected to transnational organized crime groups.
