Will Biden Exit the Presidential Race? Campaign Spokesman Clarifies
President Joe Biden will not be exiting the 2024 presidential race, a spokesperson for his campaign stated after the incumbent experienced a lackluster performance in the first televised debate against his main rival, Donald Trump.
As reported by The Hill, discussions within Democratic ranks have emerged regarding the possibility of replacing Biden with a new candidate following the debate. "Of course, he’s not stepping down," said Biden's campaign spokesperson, Seth Shuster, in a text message.
Moreover, the president himself denied any likelihood of withdrawing from the race after the debate. "No, it’s difficult to debate a liar. The New York Times discovered that he lied 26 times," Biden stated, referring to former President Trump.
Earlier reports indicated that the possibility of replacing Biden with another candidate was under discussion following the first debate between U.S. presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump. During his performance, Biden occasionally made verbal slips. While he did not make any major mistakes, there was a moment when his train of thought appeared to derail, which Trump noted. "I really don’t know what he said at the end of the sentence. And I think he doesn’t remember at all," joked the former president.
Following this debate, a conversation has begun within the Democratic Party regarding whether Biden’s candidacy could be withdrawn and replaced by another candidate, which would require the sitting president's personal consent. The Democratic National Convention, where the party's nominee will be finalized, is set to take place in August.
Notably, according to a CNN poll, 67% of viewers believe the Republican candidate outperformed the incumbent president. Only 33% of viewers think Joe Biden performed better than his opponent, according to the poll's results.
CNN emphasizes that the poll results do not reflect the views of all voters. Furthermore, the network and its audience are considered supporters of the Democratic Party. Based on the network’s data, prior to the debate, voters (55% to 45%) stated they expected Donald Trump to perform better than the current U.S. president.
