VIDEO: An Attempted Coup in Bolivia
An attempted coup has taken place in Bolivia. Bolivian President Luis Arce has called on the country's residents to stand against the attempted coup after military forces tried to seize the presidential palace. The attempt ended unsuccessfully and the soldiers were forced to retreat, as reported by Radar Armenia.
"It is necessary for the people of Bolivia to organize and mobilize against the coup for the sake of democracy. We cannot allow coup attempts to seize the lives of Bolivians again," he stated.
General Juan Jose Suniga, who led the attack on behalf of the Bolivian army, announced that the military's goal is to restore democracy in the country and promised to release political prisoners from jails. "The armed forces intend to rebuild democracy and make it a real democracy," he said while surrounded by soldiers and eight tanks near the presidential residence.
Later, the president announced that he had appointed new military leadership. The new commander of the army, Jose Wilson Sanchez, first ordered the troops to retreat and return to their bases. Following this, the military began to leave Murillo Square.
The Bolivian Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation. The leader of the failed military coup, General Suniga, has been arrested. During questioning, Suniga stated that the events were ordered by Bolivian President Luis Arce.
It is worth noting that this South American country established diplomatic relations with Armenia back in 1992, and in 2018, Deputy Foreign Minister Ashot Hovakimyan visited Bolivia.
