Armenian Basketball Team Wins Friendly Tournament in Los Angeles
The Armenian national basketball team, under the leadership of Rex Kalamian, participated in a training camp and friendly tournament in Los Angeles as part of their preparation for the qualifying rounds of the World Championship, emerging as the tournament winners. This information was reported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (MoESCS).
In their first game, Armenia faced the Guatemalan team, securing a convincing victory with a score of 89-57. The most effective player of the match was Andre Spight Mkrtchyan, who scored 21 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and provided 4 assists.
In the second game, our team competed against Ireland and won in a thrilling match with a score of 92-91, thereby becoming the tournament champions. Again, Andre Spight Mkrtchyan was the standout player, achieving 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists against Ireland.
It is noteworthy that 16 basketball players, including young talents, were invited to join the team. Chris Jones did not participate due to injury, while Davit Khachatryan was recovering from an injury, and Arkadi Mkrtichyan was also absent.
The Armenian basketball national team faced the Austrian team in the first round of the World Championship qualifiers in Vienna in late February but lost with a score of 91-106. Subsequently, in the second game of the qualifying round, they hosted the Albanian team at home and secured an impressive victory with a score of 84-79.
Our national team will play their next match on November 24, welcoming Austria to Yerevan. The Armenian basketball team’s participation in the training camp in the USA was supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, as stated in the announcement.
