South Korea Terminates Military Agreement with North Korea

The National Security Council of South Korea (NSC) will discuss a draft for the complete termination of the inter-Korean military agreement from 2018, according to Yonhap News Agency, citing the South Korean presidential administration.

According to the draft, the agreement will be severed as long as trust between Seoul and Pyongyang is not restored. The agency reported that today’s meeting of the National Security Council has included the discussion of the bill in tomorrow's agenda.

The Inter-Korean agreement (September 19, 2018) envisages measures aimed at reducing tensions in the military sector, including the establishment of buffer zones in border areas. In November 2023, South Korea announced a partial withdrawal from fulfilling the terms of that agreement, a decision prompted by North Korea's launch of reconnaissance satellites.
