Iran's Majlis Speaker Nominated for Presidential Elections

The Speaker of Iran's Majlis (Parliament), Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, has visited the Islamic Republic's electoral headquarters and submitted documents to participate in the presidential elections. This is reported by TASS, citing the Mehr news agency.

It is noted that Qalibaf is considered one of the leading favorites for the presidential elections in Iran. He served as the mayor of Tehran from 2005 to 2017. Qalibaf previously ran for the presidency in 2005 but finished in fourth place.

The snap presidential elections in Iran were announced following the crash of President Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter in East Azerbaijan Province while returning from the inauguration ceremony of a reservoir near the border with Azerbaijan, attended by Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials. There were no survivors among those on board the crashed helicopter.

According to Iran's Constitution, in the event of the president's death, the duties of the president are temporarily assumed by the country's first vice president, Mohammad Mohber, until the elections are held.
