Human Rights Defender Visits Flood-Affected Areas, Holds Conversations with Over 50 Residents
The Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan conducted fact-finding activities in the disaster-affected areas of Lori province on May 31, accompanied by representatives from her office. The Defender visited communities impacted by flooding and held individual conversations with over 50 residents, including families who had been evacuated.
All issues have been recorded on-site, as well as the damages caused by the floods. In addition to a range of social issues, citizens raised concerns related to property rights, loss of documents, compensation for damages, and the right to education. The residents identified compensation-related matters as urgent issues that need addressing, which the Defender considers a priority for ensuring the proper realization of numerous fundamental rights.
Concerns were also raised regarding the psychological state of individuals. In this regard, the Defender emphasized the importance of providing adequate psychological support to the residents.
Moreover, the Defender highlighted that issues related to children's right to education are of paramount importance, especially when considering the psychological impact of the situation on children during the organization of examinations.
Anahit Manasyan informed the residents that several of the issues raised have already been referred to the relevant state authorities for resolution. Other issues identified during the fact-finding work will be summarized and sent to the appropriate bodies. The Defender assured that she would assist in resolving all problems within her jurisdiction and ensure the proper realization of people's rights.
On the same day, Anahit Manasyan also visited neighborhoods affected by flooding alongside Gnel Sanosyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures, and over 40 diplomatic representatives accredited in Armenia. Manasyan also visited the Sanahin station neighborhood and conversed with residents. During her visit, MP Aren Mkrtchyan presented the damages incurred by the settlement due to the flooding.
During her trip to Lori, the Human Rights Defender held a press conference at the Unified Information Center in Alaverdi.
