Investigative Committee Reports on Today's Unrest
On May 31, 2024, a report was received from the Police of the Republic of Armenia regarding unrest occurring during the period of 15:00-16:00 hours the same day. The unrest was led by the organizers and participants of the "Tavush for Homeland" movement, who attempted to breach the police barriers to enter the Consulate of the Republic of Armenia located at 3 Vazgen Sargsyan Street, Government House 2 in Yerevan.
During these actions, violence was used against the police forces, with stones, water-filled containers, smoke bombs, and other objects being thrown at the officers performing their duties in the area. Some participants of the mass unrest called for the occupation of the Armenian Foreign Ministry building.
In light of the situation, the police on-site took necessary measures, leading to the arrest of 28 individuals who were taken to the police department for questioning. Based on the report, a criminal case has been initiated within the framework of Article 327, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia by the Main Investigation Department for Particularly Important Cases.
It was established that seven police officers sought medical assistance, and some participants also visited medical facilities. Decisions were made regarding the arrest of the mentioned 28 individuals based on reasonable suspicion of committing criminal acts.
Urgent measures are being undertaken to identify the entire group of individuals organizing and participating in these apparent disturbances, as well as to individualize their actions and present them to the relevant prosecutorial authority. To this end, videos available on the internet that pertain to the description of the course of the mass disturbances are also being studied. An investigation is underway.
The police have been given instructions to conduct operational and investigative measures.
