Former Iranian Parliament Speaker Registers as Presidential Candidate
Former Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani has registered his candidacy for the presidential elections this morning, according to Iranian media reports.
According to Tasnim, Larijani is considered a serious contender for the presidential position. He has held various positions since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, including serving as Minister of Culture, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, member of the Council of Expediency, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and Parliament Speaker.
The registration of candidates for the presidential elections began on May 30. On that day, the chief negotiator regarding Iran's nuclear program, Saeed Jalili, also announced his candidacy.
It is worth noting that those wishing to participate in the elections were given five days to apply to the Ministry of Interior and submit their candidacies. From June 4, all registered candidates' qualifications will be reviewed over a seven-day period, with the final list of approved candidates to be published on June 11. The election campaign will take place from June 12 to 26, while the presidential elections are scheduled for June 28.
According to the Iranian constitution, presidential elections must be held within 50 days in the event of a president's death.
It is important to mention that these snap presidential elections are taking place following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19 in East Azerbaijan province. He was accompanied by Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and several other state officials. All eight individuals on board the aircraft, including passengers and crew, lost their lives.
