Scholz Permits Ukraine to Strike Russia with German Weapons
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has supported the idea of granting Ukraine permission to strike Russia using Western weapons, according to a source quoted by Politico.
Scholz has changed his stance in recent days. On May 28, he stated that he saw no grounds for expanding the use of Western weapons in the conflict. He reminded that there are "clear rules for the supply of German weapons that have been agreed upon with Ukraine and are working."
The Chancellor has emphasized that Ukraine's political goal should be to "prevent the war from escalating into a larger conflict." Following this, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, who persuaded Scholz to allow Ukraine to strike Russian military bases within Russian territory using Western arms. At that time, the Chancellor indicated that Ukraine could use the weapons supplied to it "within the framework of international law." This allows for their use against an aggressor such as Russia, Politico noted.
Currently, 11 Western countries have given their consent for Ukraine to strike military facilities located in Russian territory using their weapons. These countries include France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Canada.
