Two EU Countries Call for Limitations on Arms Purchases for Ukraine

On May 21, the EU Council officially approved the permission to use the net proceeds from blocked Russian assets to provide military support to Kyiv. Greece and Cyprus insist that arms purchases from abroad for Ukraine should be limited through the European Peace Facility.

This information was reported by Bloomberg, citing its sources.

"Greece and Cyprus continue to argue that there should be restrictions on purchases of arms abroad (for Ukraine) despite a March agreement that states arms can be acquired from non-EU countries through this fund," the publication conveys the words of diplomats.

On May 21, the EU Council officially approved the permission to utilize the net proceeds from blocked Russian assets to provide military assistance to Kyiv. It was noted that 90 percent of the revenue would be transferred to Kyiv through the European Peace Facility, which supports the supply of arms.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell defended the Council's decision and called for immediate implementation. Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated that Budapest opposes the allocation of an additional €6.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine from the European Peace Facility. He added that EU member states' ministers have attempted to exert excessive pressure on the country, but this has not affected Hungary's determination to maintain its position.
