Will This Resolution Ensure Peace and Stability in the Future? Says Vucic

The resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly establishing an international day of remembrance for the Srebrenica genocide of 1995 only serves to further divide the region, said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic during a speech at the assembly.

“The wounds will deepen, the divisions will increase,” he stated. “Will this resolution ensure peace and stability in the future?”

Vucic added, “I can only hope that all other genocides will be recognized, including the genocide committed against the Serbian people during the First World War. The Serbian people paid a heavy price in World War II because they stood against Nazism.”

According to Vucic, this resolution will open a Pandora's box, as the UN may face numerous similar resolutions regarding issues of genocide.

The President of the Republika Srpska (part of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Milorad Dodik, called the resolution a failure, as the countries supporting it could not even secure a majority; significantly more countries opposed it, abstained, or were absent from voting.

“Nearly 110 countries did not vote, opposed it, or abstained. This is a failed resolution, and it means that the UN did not support it. The plan to impose genocide on Serbs has not succeeded,” said Dodik.

He added that, “The Americans will say that 84 votes in favor are sufficient, but they should be asked, ‘On what basis is this sufficient?’”
