Georgia Responds to US Threats

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has described the threats from the United States regarding the potential re-evaluation of relations and possible sanctions due to the adoption of the foreign agents law as counterproductive. His remarks were quoted by the portal Newsgeorgia.ge.

He emphasized that if Washington wishes to improve bilateral relations, then the threats directed at Georgia are "serious and ineffective."

"We do not want the reputation of the US to be tarnished. Our call to the US is to think about partnership and not resort to counterproductive measures. First and foremost, this will harm them. It will not cause any damage to our political team; our support will only strengthen. Therefore, once again, I urge everyone to be pragmatic," stated Kobakhidze.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Washington would fundamentally reassess its relations with Georgia if Tbilisi adopts the foreign agents law. Prior to that, US Secretary of State Assistant for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien stated that the US would impose individual sanctions on Georgian leadership if democracy were undermined in the country.
