Georgia's Parliament Declares Red Security Level

Georgia's Parliament has declared a red security level due to unrest arising from the adoption of the "Transparency of Foreign Influence" law, commonly known as the "Foreign Agents Law." The authorities' statement indicates that from 17:00 onwards, access to the Parliament building will be restricted. Only those deemed necessary by the head of the parliamentary staff, taking into account the specifics of the threat, will be allowed entry.

On May 14, the Parliament of Georgia approved the foreign agents law in its third reading with 84 votes in favor and 30 against. The opposition rally had begun prior to the adoption of the new norms, but after the law was passed, protesters attempted to storm the Parliament building and even managed to breach a metal barrier. Special forces were forced to repel the demonstrators, and several individuals were arrested.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has warned that the adoption of this law could hinder Georgia's path to joining the European Union. The specific consequences of this decision are promised to be discussed after the law's ratification.
