Zakhrova Responds to Question on Armenia's Possible Exit from CSTO
The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will remain an effective structure for ensuring security in Eurasia under any configuration. This was stated by Maria Zakhrova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, during a briefing.
"We are confident that under any configuration, the CSTO exists and will remain an effective organization responsible for maintaining security in Eurasia, as well as in its member states," the diplomat noted while responding to a question about the possibility of Armenia leaving the organization.
Zakhrova emphasized that Armenia continues to be a full member of the CSTO and must fulfill its corresponding obligations. According to her, despite the continuous accusations directed at the organization, partner countries have not taken any new steps regarding membership.
She recalled obligations stemming from the 1992 Collective Security Treaty and the 2002 Charter, as well as other documents outlining Armenia's responsibilities. "We have not questioned our Armenian partners' sovereign right to independently determine their foreign policy direction, including in the context of further cooperation with the organization," Zakhrova stated.
She also pointed out that Article 19 of the CSTO Charter establishes the possibility of leaving the alliance. A state must send an official notification to the CSTO no later than six months before the date it intends to withdraw from the organization.
