Mass Student Protests at Leading Universities in the U.S.

Julya

Pro-Palestinian protests criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza, similar to the demonstrations organized by students at Columbia University last week, have spread across the United States. This is reported by golosameriki.com.

Students at Columbia University, despite pressures from university administration and the arrest of some protesters, have refused to cease their demonstrations against Israeli operations in Gaza. Similar protests have been organized by students at various colleges and universities.

In a recent incident, police intervened after students at Princeton University in New Jersey began setting up a protest encampment. In a video posted on X, an officer tells the students, "You are all violating university regulations. These tents must be dismantled immediately." The protesters chanted, "Free Palestine."

In neighboring Massachusetts, police violently dispersed a student encampment at Emerson College in Boston, resulting in over 100 arrests. Authorities reported that the tents were removed after 1 PM on Thursday.

Students at Harvard University, Tufts University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also set up similar encampments. Atlanta police cleared a tent encampment located on Emory University's campus on Thursday morning.

In Washington, hundreds of protesters gathered on Thursday near George Washington University, calling for universities to divest from companies with ties to Israel and to cease disciplinary actions against students supporting Palestinians. The protest was organized by students from George Washington University, Georgetown University, and other educational institutions in the state.

The source details that tensions escalated last week at Columbia University’s Manhattan campus after police arrested over 100 pro-Palestinian protesters. University officials decided to continue the remainder of the semester with a hybrid learning program. The university has once again extended the deadline for students to dismantle their tents, this time until early Friday morning.

On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden told reporters, "I condemn anti-Semitic protests. I also condemn those who do not understand what is happening to the Palestinians." Reports indicate that on Monday, police in New Haven, Connecticut, arrested 48 protesters at Yale University after they refused to leave their camp set up in a plaza on campus.

Two days later, in Austin at the University of Texas, hundreds of protesters clashed with university staff as law enforcement moved in to disperse the demonstrations. Dozens of students were arrested for not leaving the area.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott wrote on X, "Arrests are now happening and will continue as long as the crowd does not disperse. These protesters need to be in jail. Anti-Semitism will not be tolerated in Texas; students participating in anti-Semitic protests at any college or university in Texas should be expelled."
