Anomalously Hot and Dry Weather to Persist

April is one of the most precipitation-rich months in our country. In the atmosphere, cyclones that penetrate from the west, southwest, and sometimes from the south dominate, bringing abundant rainfall. Active circulation of warm and dry air streams is also observed. Especially during the first ten days of April, arctic cold air flows may invade our country, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and precipitation in the form of snow in mountainous and foothill areas.

The average precipitation in April amounts to 77mm, which is 12% of the annual total. The maximum amount of precipitation is registered in mountainous regions, exceeding 100mm, while relatively less precipitation is recorded in the Ararat plain, ranging from 30-50mm. Moreover, this amount is distributed evenly throughout the month, with the number of precipitation days totaling 10-15. In high mountainous areas, precipitation is observed in the form of snow or wet snow.

The heaviest rainfall in April has been recorded in 1963, 1978, 1984, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2020, where the amount reached two to three times the monthly norm. Years such as 1943, 1950, 1970, 1983, 2008, and 2012 have been dry, with some areas of the republic experiencing only 5-10% of the monthly norm.

Regarding April 2024, starting from April 16, there has been a significant change in atmospheric circulation across the republic. Cyclonic activity has gradually weakened, while the influx of tropical warm air flows from the Arabian Peninsula has sharply intensified, resulting in a thermal background that is approximately 6-10 degrees above normal for this time of year, accompanied by sparse rainfall across Armenia.

From April 17 to 22, maximum daytime temperatures recorded in several regions of the republic exceeded historical highs ever observed. Over the next 7 days, no changes in weather conditions are anticipated, and dry weather is expected. Additionally, the air temperature is expected to rise another 4-6 degrees from April 25 to 29.
