Details on Mandatory Health Insurance for Entry into Georgia Starting June 1

Starting June 1, 2024, it will be mandatory for foreigners to have life and health insurance when entering Georgia. This insurance will cover necessary medical assistance and protection against accidents for travelers. In other words, any foreign national wishing to travel to Georgia, regardless of the purpose of the visit, must have this insurance. Failure to comply will result in a fine of 300 lari (approximately 46,000 drams) for each uninsured individual.

This law was passed by the Georgian Parliament at the end of last year. With just a month and a half left for its implementation, it is noteworthy that relevant authorities have not rushed to adequately inform the public. This awareness is crucial, especially considering how many citizens from Armenia travel to Georgia during the summer. According to statistics, around 900,000 citizens from Armenia visited Georgia in 2023 alone.

Since the morning, Auroranews has been attempting to contact interested parties and relevant authorities regarding this matter. We began with the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As our calls went unanswered, we reached out to the Armenian Embassy in Georgia, where we were directed to the consular department. The only information they provided was their awareness of the decision and that they are currently waiting for official data.

Our calls to the Georgian department of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also went unanswered. The spokesperson for the Ministry told Auroranews that they will inform us when more concrete information is available.

Auroranews also reached out to our partners in Georgia, who directed us to the TBC insurance website, where it is possible to purchase health insurance online. However, the site is bilingual in Georgian and English, and some time is needed to comprehend how to proceed with the insurance acquisition.

Nonetheless, we are not panicking; this law for mandatory life and health insurance for foreigners in Georgia will take effect on June 1, and we will keep a close watch on this matter. We will inform you of any new developments.
