Baku Will Have to Take This into Account: Georgian Expert on Armenian-Georgian Border Demarcation Works
The process of resuming border demarcation works between Armenia and Georgia is crucial, as all states must have borders defined by intergovernmental agreements. This was stated by Georgian expert Joni Melikyan during a press conversation at the conference titled 'Armenia-Georgia Strategic Partnership'.
“Having a strategic relationship with Georgia, Azerbaijan did not complete this process, and today, maintaining the same level of relations, by restarting this process, we will also somewhat demonstrate an example to our adversary,” he said, adding that the process could serve as a prototype for the Armenian-Azerbaijani process.
“If, based on the same logic, the Armenian-Georgian process begins, then Baku will have to take this into account,” the Georgian expert noted. According to him, the process is also important with Georgia as it provides a defined border with another country through an intergovernmental agreement.
In response to the observation that this process might give rise to territorial disputes, Joni Melikyan stated that most of the issues have been clarified over decades.
He mentioned: “If I am not mistaken, 40 percent remains, there are problematic areas, and it is clear that countries with friendly relations should resolve these issues through compromise.”
