Special Status for Syunik Under Turkish Control Likely Proposed, Turkish Expert Says
The Turkish pro-government newspaper "Türkiye Gazetesi" has published intriguing details regarding the Armenian-Turkish negotiations that took place during the diplomatic forum in Antalya. This was reported by Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan.
“According to the newspaper’s sources, the Turkish delegation led by Serdar Kılıç proposed granting the Syunik region (Zangezur) a special status similar to that of Kaliningrad, which is connected to Russia but operates with autonomous region status. There is no doubt that the main target of the Turkey-Azerbaijan duo is now Syunik; however, these details are critical for understanding the current tactics of the enemy,” the Turkologist wrote.
“In this context, it becomes clear the Turkish-Azerbaijani propaganda about ‘Western Zangezur.’ It is likely that after ensuring the settlement of Azerbaijanis, a special status for Syunik under Turkish control will be proposed to detach the region. This resembles the fate of Nakhchivan. If the newspaper’s information is accurate, we now know what the de-facto representatives of Armenia are discussing with Erdoğan during their ‘permanent contacts,’” the Turkologist added.
