EU Initiates Checks on AliExpress, TikTok, X, and Other Major Digital Platforms

The European Union has begun checks on AliExpress and other online services, including TikTok and X, under the Digital Services Act (DSA), aimed at overseeing the operations of digital platforms. According to sources, the online shopping platform AliExpress is under scrutiny for failing to comply with obligations to combat the sale of hazardous products, specifically counterfeit medicines. The European Commission sent a request for detailed information to the company in early November 2023. Following this, an official procedure is currently being carried out under the DSA framework, aimed at protecting consumer rights.

The EU has also requested information from eight online services, including TikTok, Facebook, Google, YouTube, and X, regarding their methods for managing the risks associated with the spread of deepfakes. Brussels is concerned that the manipulative nature of deepfakes may influence electoral processes. According to the source, the platforms will receive requests only for disclosing details about their operations, but they will be liable to pay substantial fines in case of violations.

Since August 25, the EU has decided to enhance oversight of 19 online platforms considered to fall into the 'particularly large' category under the DSA. These now include services like X, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Google, and Amazon Store. Breton emphasized that the new legislation will prioritize the protection of children and the fight against misinformation, including opposition to 'pro-Russian propaganda.' He also noted that the European Commission will thoroughly examine all these platforms for compliance with European regulations and will impose penalties for any violations found.
