U.S. House of Representatives Passes Bill to Ban TikTok
Mariam Z.
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that requires the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, to either divest from the social media platform or face a ban in the United States.
This poses a significant challenge for one of the world's most popular social media platforms, which has 170 million American users.
For the ban to take effect, the bill must still be approved by the Senate and then signed by the president. If the bill becomes law, TikTok will be given approximately five months to separate from ByteDance; otherwise, U.S. app stores will be prohibited from hosting the application on their platforms.
The bill states that TikTok and ByteDance are "controlled by a foreign adversary."
