At Least 43 People Killed in Fire at High-Rise Building in Bangladesh

At least 43 people have died as a result of a devastating fire that broke out on Thursday evening in a high-rise building in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. This was reported by Daily Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Samanta Lal Sen, confirmed today that the deaths have been verified. The minister noted that 33 bodies were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while another 10 were sent to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.

Anwar Islam, the inspector of the Dhaka Fire Service and Civil Defense, previously reported that around 75 people, including 42 who were unconscious, were rescued from the Green Cozy Cottage shopping center and quickly transported to several hospitals. According to the official, rescuers are currently working at the scene.

At least 12 fire units were dispatched to the area after receiving relevant information at around 21:30 local time on Thursday. The fire was extinguished by around 23:30.

Another fire service employee, who wished to remain anonymous, warned that the death toll from the devastating fire is likely to rise. By Friday morning, parts of the building were still ablaze. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
