Hunger Strike at Vanadzor Prison: Detainees Demand Dignified Conditions
Members of the 'Armenia' parliamentary faction, Garnik Danielyan and Armenuhi Kyureghyan, visited the Vanadzor penitentiary institution following alerts from the relatives of detainees. 'We have studied the situation in detail, both prior to and on-site at the detention facility, toured the cells, addressed property issues, and examined living conditions. We personally listened to the complaints and concerns of the detainees. Afterwards, we met with the head of the Vanadzor prison and presented the raised issues and the problems that concern the detainees. We heard the director's arguments regarding these matters. In his presence, we also raised the issue of water quality, which was communicated to the Deputy Minister of Justice as well. I should note that we have previously addressed the issue of unfit drinking water in correctional facilities. The weight of water has been unjustly included in the expenses, which we believe is unreasonable. The administration assured us that they would follow up on this issue as well.
Shortcomings related to medical services were also observed. It turned out that detainees with health problems are waiting for necessary medications for months. A group of detainees were conducting a hunger strike, demanding more dignified conditions. I have called for serious medical oversight regarding the individuals on hunger strike. It should be noted that we will be following up on all the listed issues; we will regularly visit penitentiary institutions to understand whether there are any shortcomings. Everything will be done to ensure that the rights of detainees are not violated in our country, and that dignified living conditions are not breached. Additionally, we will maintain constant communication with the relatives of individuals held in prisons,' wrote the MP.
