January 2024 Recorded as the Hottest in History
January 2024 has been recorded as the hottest January in history, with scientists attributing this to climate change. This information was reported by Reuters.
According to the data from the Climate Change ‘Copernicus’ service, last month surpassed the previous record for the hottest January, which was set in 2020.
Furthermore, 2023 has been recognized as the hottest year on the planet since observations began in 1850.
Since June 2023, every month has become hotter compared to the same month of the previous year. Samantha Burgess, the director of the Climate Change ‘Copernicus’ service, stated, “This is not only the record hottest January but we have also had a 12-month period where temperatures have exceeded pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
In 2015, under the Paris Agreement concerning climate, countries agreed to attempt to keep global warming above 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Although temperatures have exceeded 1.5 degrees during the past 12 months, it has not yet crossed the target set by the Paris Agreement, which accounts for the planet's average temperature over several decades.
Some scientists believe that achieving this target is no longer realistic, but they have also called for quicker action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to avoid worse consequences.
