History of Armenia Should Be Taught in Schools: Andreasian on Renaming the Subject

The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Zhanna Andreasian, addressed the initiative to rename the subject "History of the Armenians" to "History of Armenia" in the National Assembly. According to the minister, through discussions, she has come to the conclusion that the name of the subject is not a matter of professional domain.

She stated, "The subject of 'History of the Armenians', which was taught, should have a specific purpose. We live in the Republic of Armenia, and the history taught in Armenian schools should be the history of Armenia. This does not mean that by calling it 'History of Armenia', the content that forms part of our history will be excluded. This is not about content at all. The content remains the same, regardless of the names. The name represents a methodological perspective from which we approach the teaching of history, and when I say that the teaching of history has a specific purpose, I want to emphasize that history is taught differently in different countries. In each country, the teaching of history is primarily a process of forming the citizens of that state," she noted and added that it is crucial for the teaching of history to be constructed around the axis of the state.

According to her, today's textbooks are instilling a lack of state-oriented thinking in students.
