The True Cost of Russia's Victory is Too Great for All of Us, Macron Says
The European Union must make bold decisions to protect Ukraine by preventing any actions from the U.S. to halt or reduce its military support for the country, said Emmanuel Macron.
As reported by The Guardian, Macron made these remarks in Sweden, emphasizing that the future architecture of European security, including arms control agreements covering the European area, can no longer be regulated solely by the U.S. and Russia, and Europe must have the right to determine its own future.
However, Macron also asserted that if Europe truly accelerates its efforts and helps prevent a Russian victory, the U.S. will no longer have a monopoly through NATO in determining future relations with Moscow.
Speaking alongside Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at the Swedish Defence Academy, Macron stated, "This is a crucial moment for Europe. We must be ready to act to protect and support Ukraine with whatever is necessary, regardless of what America decides. Europe has been fortunate to have a partner like America, but we must be clear: Ukraine is part of the European continent, and whatever the U.S. decides, we must make the right and bold decisions to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people."
According to Macron, Europe must do whatever it takes for years to come, regardless of the cost, to make it impossible for Russia to achieve victory. In the opinion of the French president, if this happens, Europe will lack a security architecture, which will have repercussions for NATO's eastern flank, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
Macron stated, "In the short and long term, the true cost of Russia's victory is too great for all of us." He noted that Europe will need to ramp up its own defense production efforts so that Ukraine can engage in sustainable peace negotiations.
