Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and His Wife Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison
A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Imran Khan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 14 years in prison over a corruption case involving the sale of valuable items from the Toshakhana, the state's treasury, as reported by Geo TV.
Both are banned from holding any public office for 10 years and each is required to pay a fine of 787 million rupees (approximately $2.8 million).
The new ruling comes after a special court sentenced Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to 10 years in prison for disclosing state secrets.
The Toshakhana case involves the sale of items from the treasury without paying taxes. In October 2022, Pakistan's election commission stripped Khan of his parliamentary mandate and barred him from holding elected or appointed office for five years, after finding him guilty of selling 52 valuable gifts stored in the Toshakhana and concealing information about gifts he received personally.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who has led the country following Khan, stated that Khan sold state treasures worth 140 million Pakistani rupees (over $630,000) in Dubai.
