Stray Dog Sterilization Not Implemented in Numerous Communities

In many communities across the Republic, the sterilization of stray dogs is not being conducted due to budget constraints, which hinder the carrying out of competitions for sterilization contracts. In many cases, even if a competition is announced, there are no participants. This information was presented today during a discussion initiated by Arengdaz Manukyan, a member of the National Assembly's Permanent Committee on Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs, by Karen Hakobyan, Deputy Chief of Police of the Republic of Armenia.

According to the data provided, the majority of citizen reports to the police in 2023 have been related to dog attacks on people, biting incidents, aggressive behavior, noise, and gathering near trash bins. Citizens are also reporting that they fear potential attacks from stray animals and are afraid to send their children to school alone due to the stray dogs in the vicinity.

Hakobyan presented data regarding the situation of dog sterilization by region. It was noted that in the Kotayk region, sterilization is not being carried out in the areas serviced by the Kotayk and Hrazdan police departments, while in the Charentsavan and Nairi areas, although 550 sterilizations have been conducted, no current sterilizations are taking place.
