Sweden More Than Ready to Become NATO Ally, Says White House
The United States is closely monitoring the Turkish parliament's vote on approving Sweden's application for NATO membership. This was stated by John Kirby, the Strategic Communications Coordinator for the National Security Council, in a recent press briefing.
“First and foremost, we understand that the Turkish parliament may make this decision today. Of course, we are watching this closely,” said the official.
“As President Joe Biden has said, Sweden is more than ready to become a NATO ally, and we are certainly looking forward to their becoming a member of the alliance, but I will not get ahead of the Turkish parliament's decision,” Kirby noted. He also expressed hope that Hungary, which has also not ratified the kingdom's NATO membership, will follow the Turkish parliament's voting outcome.
